CINEASIA / HONG KONG – (December 12, 2012) – Megabox, one of South Korea’s largest cinema chain, has chosen Christie Duo™ to power up its M2 Theater, the largest screen at its MEGABOX COEX Mall, measuring 17.4-meters wide and 7.4-meters high. Following the successful installation of the advanced cinema solution at M2 Theater, Megabox will add two more Christie Duo solutions to two of its large-screen theaters in its chain, which will be fully operational by mid December. With the three Christie Duo installations in place, Megabox anticipates to use the three theaters as a platform to premier the much-awaited 3D HFR (High Frame Rate) version of the movie, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” in mid December.
Established in 2000, Megabox has won the hearts and minds of moviegoers with its motto of "the theater that's more exciting than the movies!" Within three months of the opening of its first cineplex, it attracted more than a million moviegoers. Today, Megabox has become one of the largest cinema chains with more than 60 cineplexes in South Korea. Its cineplex at COEX Mall is the largest among all its properties – boasting 16 screens and more than 4,000 seats, of which the M2 Theater stakes its claim as the largest screen within the chain. It also set and continues to hold a Guinness world record of 622 million attendees in a year.
“As the cinema market becomes more competitive, exhibitors are focusing on the differentiation of the quality of cinema. As a leader in the cinema industry, we believe the differentiation comes from “3S,” that is, screen, sound and seats. To realize this differentiation, we made our maiden move with the opening of M2 Theater last summer. By capitalizing on the expertise of professionals in their respective fields including Christie, we’ve received positive responses from moviegoers. Some even compare their experiences at M2 Theater to those of IMAX on their blog,” mentioned Jin Hwan Kim, vice president, Megabox. “The success of our profit-generating M2 Theater proves that it’s a worthwhile investment. We look forward to deploying more Christie Duo solutions as we multiply the success of M2 Theater brand across our chain in the near future.”
Christie Duo, available for the 2K or 4K Christie Solaria® Series digital cinema projectors, is an integration kit specially designed to project 2D light levels while optimizing 3D and other special effects on the largest screens. With automated features that calibrate, align and optimize the images for 2K or 4K projectors, Christie Duo delivers a completely seamless, premium movie experience for the world’s largest screens at a cost that all manner and size of exhibitors can afford.
The projection system installed at Megabox M2 Theater consists of a Christie Duo integration kit and two Christie CP4230 Digital Cinema® projectors, Christie’s latest and brightest 4K DLP® offerings. Using a single-mirror configuration, one projector directly faces the screen, while the second projector is positioned at a right angle to the first projector. The mirror assembly allows the two images projected by the two projectors to be converged across the entire screen for a higher quality projection than normally achievable for large-screen venues.
“We’re glad that the moviegoers at Megabox M2 Theater enjoy the cinema projection using Christie Duo with Christie CP4230 digital cinema projectors,” noted Lin Yu, vice president, Christie Asia Pacific. “It’s very encouraging as more cinemas with large screen are adopting our Christie Duo solution in their projection systems. We’re confident that Christie Duo will further enhance the cinematic experience of moviegoers and in turn help to drive up the ticket sales of exhibitors worldwide.”
Early adopters of Christie Duo include Grupo Araújo de Cinemas in Brazil, ArcLight Cinemas and the Dolby Theatre in the United States. Australia’s Hoyts Corporation was the first exhibitor in Asia Pacific to deploy Christie Duo solution in its Blacktown Cinema 5 in Sydney.
Christie is showcasing its one-stop cinema projection solutions including the Christie Duo at Booth #201, CineAsia in Hong Kong Dec 11 - 13.
