Christie Creates a Lifestyle Trend Integrating The Past, Present And Future of Shanghai For WH Ming Hotel

SHANGHAI, China – (January 14, 2013) – Christie®, a global leader in visual display solutions, and its valued partner, Wincomn Technology, are creating a lifestyle trend for the Shanghainese at the WH Ming Hotel under its Mira Dining Space project. The project uses 16 Christie projectors and unique acoustic-optic effects to build a creative art space reflecting the past, present and future of Shanghai.

WH Ming Hotel is a five-star hotel brand of Xiao Nan Guo Group, a world-renowned leader of exquisite food and fashion lifestyle. Mira Dining Space, located on the fifth floor of WH Ming Hotel, is a creative art space co-designed by Sherwood Hu, a famous film director, and Huimin Wang, the hotel founder. Drawing inspiration from the Shanghai Pavilion’s theme video featuring the history and future of the Shanghai transportation system, the Mira Dining Space tells a Shanghai story through various styles of cuisine in different eras.

As guests enter the Time Tunnel, they are immersed in different time zones showing specially-designed images displayed by the Christie projectors. At the exit of the Time Tunnel is a foggy gate with a maid from Qing Dynasty’s imperial palace created by Christie projectors and a fog screen. Then a magnificent Nobility restaurant of the Qing Dynasty comes into sight after passing through the foggy gate. This scene uses a 25 percent blending projection generated by Christie projectors on a 12.36-meter wide and 2.83-meter high curved screen. Together with the images of the new Qingming River Scene, it creates an immersive environment for the guests.

Across the Christie-created virtual revolving door is the Paramount of old Shanghai with small stage at the front projecting old Shanghainese movies. The guests then proceed to the Stone Gate of old Shanghai city. The Stone Gate is a life-sized modeling screen measuring 2.7-meter by 1.8-meters, with a 9:16 contrast ratio provided by Christie projectors.

The next stop is a factory canteen where the Christie projectors and short zoom lenses present the canteen’s windows, which show the virtual scenery outside the window of textile mill employees getting off work. The impressive images bring people to the old days.

Finally, the guests arrive at an area laid out in contemporary Huangpu River style. Here, four Christie projectors in a two by two setup provide a 20 percent blend on a quarter of a semi-spherical screen, a curved screen, a dome screen and a rectangular screen. The cascading projection technology makes use of the high-tech images to bring people back to the modern time.

“The Mira Dining Space project of WH Ming Hotel took more than nine months to complete,” mentioned Li Yuqiang, head of the project, Wincomn Technology. “Compared with the conventional luxurious decoration style, it creates a new fashion for the hotel industry with the virtual decoration of artistic space through acoustic-optic image technology on a large scale. Wincomn Technology is honored to bring the artists’ creative ideas into reality by cooperating with the world’s leading projector manufacturer, Christie.”

“Together with WH Ming Hotel and Wincomn Technology, we are pleased to be involved in creating a lifestyle trend in Shanghai,” said Lin Yu, vice president, Christie Asia Pacific. “As business entities recognize the importance of visual display technology, the Mira Dining Space project is a testimony to how the modern world is adopting the technology to create a lifestyle statement. With WH Ming Hotel as an adopter of our technology, we hope to work with more aspiring individual artists and companies to make a difference to the modern world.”
