At the New World Center in Miami Beach, FL—an internationally renowned concert hall and campus which is the home of the New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy—enhancing the musical experience with live projected images on large screens surrounding the stage and audience as well as outdoors during performances has created a unique and iconic musical experience for audiences that come from near and far to attend events there.In order help create that experience, Clyde Scott, Director of Video Production for the New World Center and his team installed a comprehensive Telemetrics robotic camera system in 2010 that utilized 10 PTZ cameras mounted strategically around the venue to cover the entire stage and the hall itself with both close-up and wide shots that brought valuable perspective to the orchestra’s performance. In addition they also added four Christie 30k projectors to drive the resulting imagery to a large outdoor projection surface for their WALLCASTTM concert series.[Immediately adjacent to the New World Center is SoundScape Park, where 2,000-3,000 people come to watch the live performances projected on the 7,000-square-foot eastern façade of the venue.]The goal at the time was to implement a system that was reliable, silent and easy to use. The system performed admirably and so in 2016 they returned to Telemetrics for a complete upgrade/overhaul which features the latest 4K broadcast cameras on Telemetrics’s remotely controlled articulating heads. The new custom-designed system includes two RCCP-1A remote control panels as well as two RCCP-1 control panels handling 10 Hitachi SK-UHD4000 4K PTZ cameras via Telemetrics’ multi-featured Studio Software to mange the entire system; 10 PT-LP-S5 motorized pan/tilt heads, Enterprise Database Control Software, and two EP6-700 elevating pedestals. All of the equipment is connected via fiber-optic cabling.All of the new gear was supplied by Enlightened Digital (Orlando Fla.), which served as the prime contractor, focusing on systems design, equipment evaluation, testing, and commissioning.One of the features of the Telemetrics RCCP-1A Remote Camera Control Panel that Scott and his team use extensively is the panel’s speed control which allows a user to dynamically set moves based on the live performances on stage.The facility’s distance learning technology, in-house HD cable system, video editing and production rooms, and large format projection all benefit from the Telemetrics system. What they are always after is unobtrusive camera moves that have a “natural human feel.”“With any robotic system, the idea is to approach the same level of quality that you could get with a live camera operator,” Scott said. “One feature that we’re developing with Telemetrics is having multiple targeted shots within the same recall. Our new Telemetrics system includes advanced shot composition where multiple shots are plotted and carried out through robotics. It makes a huge difference, both for us and the audience.”“The Telemetrics system is exactly the right size and features the most capability for us,” Scott added. “It’s extremely quiet, emitting almost no sound from the pan/tilt heads. That’s obviously critical to avoid any unwanted noise during the performances. In addition, both the RCCP-1 and RCCP-1A panels are extremely easy to use, allowing us to train new operators rather quickly.”With Telemetrics technology, Scott and New World Symphony are maintaining a consistent visual look and dynamic and error-free coverage of the proceedings resulting in magical presentations. Now, when patrons come to the Frank-Gehry-designed New World Center, they are assured of a high-quality, musical and visual experience that’s second to none. The Telemetrics robotic system ensures that the performances will be captured in all their melodious and visual glory; by remote operators manipulating joysticks that never miss a beat.
