OLD LYME, CONNECTICUT - OCTOBER 2009: American rock band, Taking Back Sunday (TBS) have maintained an ever-growing legion of fans since they started their career almost a decade ago. The band's latest release on Warner Brothers, New Again, retains the power, emotion, and hooks that catapulted its previous release, Louder Now, to the upper strata of the Billboard Top 200, and its current tour with blink-182 is infecting ever-more hipsters with gloriously incurable cases of TBS. To convey the power and finesse of the band, FOH engineer Marc Jacob Hudson relies on Sennheiser evolution 900 series microphones and Sennheiser ew 300 IEM G2 wireless personal monitors. "Sennheiser's evolution 900 series has a solid high-end sound that's consistent across the entire line," Hudson said. "There's not a loser in the bunch. The mics work well together sonically, and nowhere is that more apparent than on the drums." Hudson relies on the snappy but solid combination of the Sennheiser e 901 condenser and e 902 dynamic to pull chest-thumping tones out of Mark O'Connell's kick drum. Sennheiser e 904s - well regarded for both their sound and their easy-to-use rim clips - round things out up top, while a pair of Neumann KM 184s provide the sheen and the shimmer for the cymbals and hats. Hudson uses Sennheiser e 906 and e 609 super-cardioid dynamic mics for Fazzi's Orange Rocker 30 amp/Marshall cab. For guitarist Eddie Reyes' Bad Cat Lynx and additional amps Hudson relies on a triad of Sennheiser e 906s, the palindromic complement to the e 609 and deserved winner of a Technical Excellence and Creativity (TEC) Award. Backing vocalists Fazzi and Rubano use Sennheiser e 935s, another TEC Award winner. The cardioid e 935 provides excellent rejection, smooth off-axis response, and sound quality that makes TBS's vocals ride unobtrusively at the forefront of the mix. "Everyone in the band uses ew 300 IEM G2s for wireless personal monitors," Hudson said. "I like the frequency flexibility and reliability, in fact we recently switched to a new frequency to meet the current federal guidelines." In addition to all five members of the band, techs use the Sennheiser wireless monitors to keep on top of the set.
